PFD, life jacket, buoyancy vest, buoyancy aid, and life preserver are all terms used interchangeably around the world - they all refer to the same type of safety garment designed to keep you afloat in the water. The key difference worth knowing is that not all PFDs are equal: buoyancy ratings vary from Level 50 (suitable for inshore watersports) through to Level 150+ (designed for offshore and rough water conditions). In warm and sunny conditions, the priority is UV protection and staying cool. Here's what to wear:

• Top: A UPF50+ hooded rashie, long sleeve rashie, or UV Ocean Tech tee. The hooded rashie is the most popular choice for full face and neck coverage.
• Bottom: UV paddle shorts or pants, boardshorts, or UV leggings depending on your sport.
• Eyes: VIZE+ polarised sunglasses to block glare off the water.
• Head: A UPF50+ cap, hat or visor and have a chin strap or cap keeper for windy conditions.
• Feet: Water shoes or neoprene socks if launching from rocky spots or boat ramps.
• Safety: A lightweight PFD like the V4 or VXPII.

In cold conditions, layering is key. Start with the right base and build from there:

• Base layer: A VCOLD thermal top, choosing between the Base Layer (Warm), Hydroflex (Warmer), or Flex Top (Warmest) depending on conditions.
• Legs: VCOLD pants or a FlexForce wetsuit pant.
• Wetsuit: A FlexForce 2mm or 3.5mm for extra warmth and wind protection.
• Outer layer: A VDRY smock or 1/2 zip vest to block spray and wind.
• Hands: Sailing or paddling gloves.
• Feet: Neoprene socks or sailing boots.
• Safety: A PFD in a high-visibility fluro colour so you can be seen in low light conditions.
